New York Students Face Declining Reading Levels
Schools across New York State are facing a deepening challenge in literacy and literature education. Reports from educators and observations from the classroom suggest that students are finding it increasingly difficult to read an entire novel from beginning to end. Classic children’s and young adult novels that were widely read and passed from student to student a decade ago have largely given way to shorter, fragmented texts used to prepare pupils for standardised tests.
State data also point to the scale of the decline in reading proficiency. Fewer than half of students in grades three to eight in New York are reading at a proficient level. Educators say the growing influence of technology and social media is making it increasingly difficult for students to concentrate on longer texts, while the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence tools has created an additional challenge. Teachers report that some students become tired after reading only a few pages, while others turn to AI tools to summarise assigned texts rather than reading them in full.
Faced with these concerns, educators are adopting different approaches to bring students back into direct engagement with texts. Some experienced teachers have eliminated homework altogether in an effort to prevent students from using AI tools to complete assignments, instead moving reading and writing activities entirely into the classroom, where they can be carried out under teacher supervision.
The problem, however, extends beyond students’ digital habits. Teachers say the structure of the current curriculum and New York State’s standardised testing system also makes it more difficult to devote time to longer works. With schools under pressure to prepare students for state examinations, classroom instruction increasingly focuses on analysing short, complex passages rather than reading complete texts and novels. Educators warn that this approach is steadily reducing the time available for students to read and engage with a book from beginning to end.
