Angola to Establish the Country’s First Virtual University for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education
Angola is preparing to establish the country’s first virtual university by 2028 in order to ensure equal opportunity in higher education and eliminate academic boundaries. This innovative project, which will be launched under the name Virtual University of Angola (UVA), aims to open a brand-new academic door for individuals who are unable to participate in traditional formal education due to physical mobility restrictions or working hours, particularly disadvantaged groups living in rural areas.
This platform, which will offer distance and blended learning options, will enable individuals to receive a high-quality higher education independent of time and space constraints. Regarding the current status of the project, preliminary studies on the institution’s operational model have been completed and submitted for public consultation to gather input from civil society and academia.
Rather than constructing a large, standalone physical or administrative campus, the planned virtual university will operate within an existing, well-established higher education institution. As the testing processes for the digital platforms and technical infrastructure continue, significant savings in both cost and time will be achieved through the shared use of academic and administrative staff.
This virtual campus, which also holds great significance for the African continent’s vision for higher education, will offer its students nationally recognized, certified undergraduate and postgraduate programs through digital classrooms, interactive online discussion forums, and comprehensive electronic libraries.
