Japan Sounds the Alarm Over Student Suicides as Schools Reopen

With the reopening of schools in September after a long summer break in Japan, high-level precautions are being taken across the country against the spike in student suicides. Experts point out that transitioning from a relaxed, rule-free holiday period back to an intense educational environment with strict rules, academic pressures, and evening cram schools creates massive stress for young people.

Considering the risks of this critical period, the Children and Families Agency designated August 20 to September 9 as an intensive effortperiod for suicide prevention, launching campaigns to remind young people that they are not alone and can receive free, anonymous support. The statistics underlying these measures are quite alarming. Although Japans overall suicide rate has been steadily declining, dropping below 20,000 for the first time since 1978, 538 students took their own lives last year, reaching the highest level on record since 1980.

A 24 percent increase was observed specifically in suicides among junior high school girls, and it was determined that the highest number of incidents occurred in September. According to a report by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, fear of academic failure, bullying, and anxiety about the future are among the primary causes of this tragic trend. Experts emphasize that in addition to academic stress, ongoing post-pandemic disruptions, cyberbullying, screen addiction, and excessive social media use deeply affect the mental health of young people.
