A Linguistic Approach Brings a Fresh Perspective to Language Education

Research conducted in England has revealed that students are interested not only in linguistic skills but also in the social and cultural dimensions of language learning. In contrast, the current language curriculum has been found to focus predominantly on the four core skills: speaking, writing, reading, and listening.

This narrow focus is said to weaken students’ connection with the language and has led to the perception that language learning is exclusive to an elite segment of society. Experts suggest that integrating linguistics into the curriculum could address this issue.

Linguistics considers language not merely as a tool for communication, but as a cultural, historical, and psychological construct. This broader perspective supports the development of students’ critical thinking skills. Moreover, the approach not only enhances language lessons but also complements subjects such as English, history, and geography.

Researchers note that linguistic content can be incorporated into the existing curriculum without the need for additional training. Observations show that such content increases student engagement and academic achievement. Educators also emphasise that this method improves motivation and makes language lessons more inclusive.
