Estonia eschews phone bans in schools and takes leap into AI

Estonia encourages students to use digital tools in the learning process rather than imposing mobile phone bans in schools, as is the case in many other European countries. According to the 2022 PISA results, Estonia ranked first in Europe in mathematics, science, and creative thinking. Building on this success, the country has launched a new artificial intelligence initiative, the AI Leap project. As part of the programme, free access to AI tools will be provided to 58,000 students and 5,000 teachers by 2027. The rollout began in September, starting with students aged 16 to 17. Minister of Education Kristina Kallas stated that Estonian society is highly receptive to digital technologies and that mobile phones do not present a problem in educational settings. She also emphasised that 16-year-olds in Estonia are permitted to vote in local elections via mobile phone, arguing that banning such devices in schools would be contradictory.
