Weekend Break Policy Sparks Debate in China

The decision to offer a two-day weekend break to high school students in China has sparked public debate. While the policy, known as Shuangxiu, is expected to be implemented across all high schools, weekend classes are still being held in many institutions.

Since April, the Ministry of Education has taken disciplinary action against schools that failed to comply with the ban. School administrators who resisted the policy have been dismissed, and some schools have been excluded from receiving awards. However, it has been observed that many students preparing for the university entrance examination, Gaokao, continue to spend their weekends attending extra lessons.

Experts warn that long study hours contribute to depression and burnout among students. Students themselves report that having a full weekend off helps them feel more energetic and focused during the week. Retired teachers also argue that the policy supports more effective and sustainable learning.

On the other hand, many parents oppose the two-day weekend break, fearing that their children may fall behind academically.
