Rebuilding Syria’s Education System

The Syrian interim government, under the leadership of Education Minister Nazir Mohammad al-Qadri, has initiated a comprehensive education reform. The primary aim of this reform is to ensure equal access to quality education for all communities, genders, and economic groups. Minister al-Qadri emphasised the importance of education, stating, “Education is a red line for the Syrian people, more essential than water and food.”

Rebuilding Syria’s educational infrastructure after 13 years of civil war poses a significant challenge. Approximately half of the country’s 18,000 schools have been damaged or destroyed. Minister al-Qadri highlighted the critical need for international support to aid Syria’s recovery efforts.

The new government is pursuing an inclusive vision that reflects Syria’s diversity. The Ministry of Education is working to improve infrastructure, update curricula, and create a more inclusive environment for students. Additionally, it is focusing on enhancing the quality of education to support the future success of Syrian children. Minister al-Qadri stressed that education is not only vital for individual development but also a cornerstone of Syria’s reconstruction.
