Finland Takes a Stand Against Low-Quality Scientific Publishing

Finland’s Publication Forum (Jufo) has made a groundbreaking decision in scientific publishing by blacklisting 271 journals from MDPI and Frontiers publishers, downgrading them to the lowest level. The decision stems from these journals frequently publishing articles with minimal editorial work and quality assessment in exchange for article processing fees.

One notable example is the publication of an article in Frontiers in Cell Development and Biology containing AI-generated nonsensical text and a disproportionate rat image. Mark Hanson from the University of Exeter notes that Poland, Spain, and Italy share similar concerns, while China is considering measures to maintain publication quality.

This decision is expected to impact the funding model of Finnish universities between 2025 and 2028.
