According to Pope Leo, AI Is Humanity’s Greatest Challenge
In his first official address to the College of Cardinals, newly elected Pope Leo XIV identified artificial intelligence as one of the most pressing global challenges. Speaking from the Vatican, the first American pope emphasized the need to safeguard human dignity, justice, and labor in the face of rapid technological change—a concern he shares with his predecessor, the late Pope Francis.
Explaining his papal name, Leo drew inspiration from Pope Leo XIII, who championed workers’ rights during the Industrial Revolution. He called for a renewed commitment to “social teaching” to confront the ethical and societal impacts of AI today. Referencing Pope Francis multiple times, Leo praised his predecessor’s legacy and pledged to carry his vision forward.
Francis, who passed away last month, had previously warned against AI reducing human relationships to algorithms and advocated for international regulation. He urged world leaders, including the G7, to ensure AI remains human-centric, particularly in decisions involving conflict and security.
