China's leading universities have announced plans to increase enrolment in artificial intelligence (AI) and other strategic areas. Prestigious institutions such as Peking University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University will open hundreds of new student positions starting in 2025, particularly in critical areas such as artificial intelligence, biomedicine, healthcare, engineering, and integrated circuits. This initiative is seen as an essential part of China's goal to build a strong educational system adapted to the digital age.
The success of Chinese technology startup DeepSeek, which developed advanced but cost-effective AI models, is considered a milestone in China's strategy to catch up with the United States in AI. These developments, combined with U.S. visa restrictions for Chinese students, have significantly strengthened China's domestic STEM talent pool.
The Chinese government has announced a vision to become a strong education nation by 2035, encouraging universities to prioritize disciplines aligned with national strategic needs, aiming to enhance digital competencies and innovation among students. Additionally, AI education programs will be expanded at primary and secondary education levels.
