Phone Ban Positively Impacts Students’ Social Lives

Burnage Academy for Boys in Manchester has successfully increased social interaction among students by implementing a phone ban 12 years ago. Despite new national guidelines introduced in 2024 to limit phone use in schools across England, this school has long adhered to this policy with remarkable success.

Greg Morrison, the school's deputy headteacher, highlighted the positive effects of the ban on students. Morrison stated that the ban has improved focus in the classroom and made students more social during breaks. “Our students play football, chat, and spend time together during lunch breaks. When phones are no longer a distraction, friendships grow stronger,” he explained.

Students also attest to the benefits of the ban. Logan, an 11th-grade student, said it has helped him concentrate better, while Lucas shared that he now engages in more conversations with friends during breaks.

Education expert Dr. Louise Black noted that while phones play a significant role in young people's lives, schools should develop policies tailored to their unique needs. The positive impact of the phone ban on social interaction at Burnage Academy offers a success story that other schools might consider emulating.
