One in Three Students in Singapore Reports Being Bullied

A recent study has revealed that school bullying in Singapore is significantly more widespread than official figures suggest. The survey, conducted with 1,000 students aged 13 to 17, found that approximately 30% of participants reported having experienced bullying. This rate stands in stark contrast to the Ministry of Education’s official data, which cites an average of just six cases per 1,000 students.

According to the results published by CNA, verbal bullying was the most common form reported. However, relational bullying — including social exclusion and the spreading of rumours — was also found to be alarmingly prevalent.

Some students who experienced bullying said the psychological pressure led them to lose interest in school, with a few even admitting to having considered suicide.

Many students stated they did not report the bullying to school authorities, fearing they would become targets themselves. Teachers, in turn, noted that they often lack the necessary training and support to address such incidents effectively, and that investigations can be time-consuming.

Education officials emphasised that various support mechanisms are already in place in schools, and that intervention strategies must remain flexible due to the differing needs of individual students. Nonetheless, some parents expressed frustration over what they perceive as teacher indifference and the lack of sufficiently deterrent measures.
