Hong Kong Mandates “National Education” Across School Curricula

The Hong Kong Education Bureau has issued a directive to all public and private schools, mandating the integration of enhanced “national education” elements into their curricula. Under the new policy, core subjects such as English, mathematics, music, physical education, and visual arts will now include content designed to familiarise students with China’s historical achievements, cultural heritage, and national security framework.

At the primary level, students will be encouraged to read articles and watch documentaries on China’s wildlife conservation efforts. Secondary school students, meanwhile, will study topics such as China’s space exploration programmes, economic development, and military advancements.

In music lessons, students will sing patriotic songs such as “My Motherland and I” and participate in folk song competitions. Traditional Chinese sports like cuju, as well as Han and Mongolian dances, are recommended as part of physical education activities.

This revision is seen as a continuation of the national security measures implemented in 2021. Education Bureau officials stated that the “mega security” approach spans 20 different security domains and aims to foster a strong sense of national identity and belonging among students.

The implementation of the new framework will be closely monitored through regular inspections and school visits.
