Disposal of Educational Tablets Raises Data Privacy Concerns in Japan

As the operational lifespan of school tablets distributed to students in Japan nears its end, serious concerns over data security have begun to emerge. These devices were introduced as part of the GIGA School Initiative, a nationwide programme designed to provide internet access to every school and its surrounding community. They contain sensitive data such as students' personal information, academic performance, and family circumstances. Approximately nine million tablets are scheduled for replacement from 2025 onwards. Local authorities are considering repurposing the outdated tablets for recycling projects or administrative use. However, experts warn that if the devices are not disposed of securely, there is a significant risk of data breaches. The process, they argue, must be managed not only as a hardware replacement effort but also with careful attention to data protection. Representatives from the Japan Association for the Privacy of Children and Student Data emphasise that local governments must adhere to secure data deletion protocols. Failure to do so, they warn, could lead to serious legal and social consequences. It is also noted that many municipalities still lack a comprehensive data disposal strategy, highlighting the urgent need for swift and effective solutions.
