Sweden Launches Major STEM Initiative

The Swedish government has introduced a new strategy to enhance the quality of education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Following a decline in students’ international mathematics performance, the aim is to raise the proportion of high-achieving pupils to 15% by 2033 and increase upper-secondary enrolment in science and technology programmes to 25%. The plan emphasises teacher training and investment in technical infrastructure. At the university level, the number of STEM students is targeted to grow from 80,000 to 90,000 by 2035. Additional measures will include incentives to boost participation among female students and support for public–private partnerships. Through these steps, the Swedish government aims to improve quality at all levels of STEM education and achieve its long-term goals.
