UK Universities Seek New Market Opportunities in India

UK-based universities are accelerating their efforts to establish campuses in India as part of a new move in the global higher education competition. Led by the University of York, several institutions are preparing to admit students for the 2026–27 academic year while planning to begin educational operations in the country. As part of initiatives announced during UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to India last year, a number of British universities—including the University of Aberdeen, the University of Bristol, and Coventry University—have also entered the process of setting up campuses in India. The University of Southampton has already launched the initiative by opening its first campus in Delhi.

The enormous demand for higher education in India drives this expansion. Approximately 40 million university students reside in the country, and projections suggest that by 2035, at least 25–30 million additional seats will be necessary. Although millions of students graduate from high school each year, the limited capacity of top-tier institutions continues to intensify the demand for quality education.

British universities aim to fill this gap, both to ease financial pressures at home and to create new opportunities within the international student market. Tuition fees at Indian campuses are expected to be lower than those in the UK, making them an attractive option particularly for upper middle-class students.
