Discipline Concerns Grow in US Schools

A comprehensive study conducted in the United States has revealed that teachers are facing a serious professional crisis due to student behavior. According to a survey carried out by the Education Week Research Center with the participation of more than 5,800 teachers, 35 percent reported that student behavior has become “much worse” compared to last year.

The study shows that behaviors such as physical violence, shouting, throwing objects, and openly defying rules are becoming increasingly common in classrooms. Teachers state that managing these issues is becoming more difficult each day due to growing class sizes and insufficient administrative support. Experts and educators emphasize that this situation negatively affects not only the quality of education but also teachers’ motivation and professional commitment. Indeed, teacher morale has declined over the past year, with student behavior identified as one of the main contributing factors.

Another key finding of the study is the role of parents in student behavior issues. Teachers report that children are not adequately prepared in terms of basic behavioral and social skills, and that parental actions often undermine disciplinary processes. Fifty-eight percent of respondents stated that parents themselves need guidance on how to teach their children appropriate behavior in a school setting.

Meanwhile, teachers argue that school administrations often side with parents and fail to enforce discipline consistently, increasing the pressure on educators. Education experts stress the need for more comprehensive solutions, warning that without sufficient support for teachers, the sustainability of education quality is at risk.
