China Moves to Become a Hub for International Students
China continues to strengthen its appeal to international students as part of its ambition to become a more influential player in the global education landscape. Wang Daquan, Director General of the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange under the Ministry of Education, stated that the country is steadily moving toward becoming one of the world’s most preferred education destinations.
Speaking at a press conference, Wang noted a significant increase in the number of international students seeking education in China over the past three years. Data indicate that applications have been rising consistently, while the diversity of students’ countries of origin has also expanded. In addition, there has been a notable increase in the number of self-funded students, alongside a steady rise in those pursuing undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degrees.
According to experts, one of the key drivers behind this growth is China’s strong cost-performance advantage. The steady improvement in the global rankings of Chinese universities and the continuous enhancement of educational quality have made the country more attractive to international students. Moreover, compared to many other countries, relatively lower tuition fees position China as a more economically accessible option.
Students also cite China's safe living conditions and stable political environment as important factors influencing their decisions. Furthermore, the country’s rapid economic growth offers international students numerous opportunities both during and after their studies. The expanding global presence of Chinese companies, along with initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative, further broadens post-graduation career prospects for those educated in China. These developments are positioning China as an emerging global hub in higher education.
