Nigeria Reintegrates Over 30,000 Children into the Education System
The Lagos State Government of Nigeria has announced that over 30,000 school-aged children have been successfully reintegrated into the education system within the past year. During a 2025 press briefing, Education Commissioner Tolani Alli-Balogun revealed that the government paid a total of 1.5 billion naira (approximately 36 million Turkish lira) in examination fees to support students' academic access.
In 2024, only 45.7% of the 58,188 students who took the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) passed both English and Mathematics, a drop in success rates that the Ministry described as concerning. In response, new strategies have been introduced, including limiting final-year progression to students who meet academic standards and promoting interactive learning techniques in classrooms.
The government is also reviving extracurricular activities in sports, arts and music, aiming to support students’ holistic development — academically, socially and emotionally. Officials see these reforms as part of a broader effort to enhance the overall quality of education in Lagos State.
