Teachers in England Rely on Self-Made Lesson Materials

A new survey published by the UK Department for Education reveals that 88% of secondary school teachers in England use lesson materials they have developed themselves when planning their classes. In contrast, only 13% reported using resources provided by the government-funded digital platform Oak National Academy.

Among teachers working in primary and special education settings, the use of Oak resources is even lower. The survey also shows that educators frequently rely on materials provided by their school or academy trust (88%), as well as free online resources (66%) to support their planning.

The findings highlight that the majority of teachers are carrying a significant burden due to a lack of high-quality, ready-to-use content. Teachers working with students who have special educational needs reported additional challenges, including insufficient funding, staff shortages, and overcrowded classrooms.

In response, the Department for Education has reiterated its commitment to inclusive education policies and announced that it will accelerate efforts to develop new content and teaching resources aimed at supporting teachers across the country.
