A Colorful Touch to Education in Nepal: Classrooms Transformed with Murals

The Rangichangi Project, which aims to improve the educational environment in public schools in rural areas of Nepal, is transforming classrooms through murals and creating more inspiring spaces for students. Carried out with the participation of volunteer artists and young people, the initiative has quickly evolved into a notable social project nationwide.

The project was launched by its founder, Samita Rana Magar, after she observed that students felt uncomfortable in dull, neglected classrooms. Particularly in rural schools, poor physical conditions negatively affected students’ motivation to learn. As a solution, classrooms are being redesigned with colorful and educational murals.

Launched in 2024, the project rapidly expanded to different regions of Nepal. So far, it has been implemented in six schools, positively changing how more than 2,000 students perceive their learning environments. Volunteers participating in the project begin the transformation process by cleaning classrooms and carrying out necessary repairs. The murals created are not only aesthetic but also educational. For younger students, themes such as animals and nature are used to foster empathy, while middle school students are encouraged through confidence-building messages. For older students, topics such as environmental issues, sustainability, and social awareness are highlighted.

Teachers involved in the project report that classroom transformations have increased students’ motivation and engagement in lessons. At the same time, the initiative provides young artists with opportunities to gain experience and access new career prospects. The Rangichangi Project highlights the importance of the physical learning environment and demonstrates how art can enhance educational processes. However, securing sustainable funding remains a significant challenge for the initiative.
