UK Visa Restrictions Affect Sudanese Students

The “emergency brake” visa restriction implemented by the United Kingdom government targeting Sudanese students has sparked widespread international debate. Announced by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, who herself comes from an immigrant background, the decision is defended as a measure to prevent “visa abuse.” However, experts and human rights advocates argue that the policy in fact targets a vulnerable group of students.

Although authorities note that some individuals arriving on student visas have applied for asylum after completing their studies, available data suggest the increase is limited. It is reported that only 120 Sudanese students applied for asylum in the period ending September 2025, representing a very small proportion of total applications. At the same time, the high acceptance rate of asylum claims from Sudanese applicants indicates that these individuals are genuinely fleeing conflict conditions.

According to experts, the ongoing civil war in Sudan and the worsening humanitarian crisis have made it necessary for students to seek education abroad. The destruction of universities and the near-collapse of academic life in the country have made overseas education the only viable option. Therefore, it is emphasized that this decision will not only restrict migration but also negatively affect the qualified human capital that Sudan will need in the future.
