England Government’s Curriculum and Assessment Review to Start in September
The England government’s new curriculum and assessment review will begin in September. The review will be led by Professor Becky Francis, CEO of the Education Endowment Foundation, who will assume her role as chair next month. As part of the review, national tours will be conducted to gather the views of education experts and practitioners. The review will focus on the key challenges to student success and particularly on the barriers holding back socio-economically disadvantaged children and those with special educational needs.
The England government emphasized that the views of key stakeholders-experts, parents, teachers, and school leaders—are critical to the curriculum assessment recommendations. It was announced that the recommendations would be published in 2025. Government officials clarified that no specific date has been set for implementing the suggestions from stakeholders, and final changes might not be applied until as late as September 2026.
Government officials highlighted that the new curriculum aims to provide excellent foundations in reading, writing, and mathematics, and to offer every young person the opportunity to develop creative thinking, digital, and communication skills that are especially valued by employers.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson stated that the review, launched as part of the curriculum development effort, is a significant step in the government’s mission to break down barriers to educational opportunity. She emphasized, “The review will breathe new life into the outdated curriculum and assessment system that has long held children back.”
