Responding to Changing Industry Demands in Singapore: Specialized IT Education
Some universities in Singapore are introducing more specialized courses in their information technology and digital curricula to keep up with changing industry demands. This step aims to provide undergraduate students with industry certifications that go beyond their general technology degrees.
As part of this program, higher education institutes like the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) are also taking various measures to increase their students’ job prospects. Associate Professor Zhu Yongqing, head of the Information and Communication Technology program at SUSS, stated that they have incorporated industry certification courses into their existing ICT curriculum. Zhu noted, “We work with industry partners to offer certification courses in different ICT areas, including cloud computing, system administration, and data communication. Students who complete these courses and pass the certification exams will receive highly recognized industry certificates. This will help improve their employability.”
In Singapore, the full-time permanent job rate for new graduates in information technology and digital technology fields has dropped by 5 points since 2021. This program was initiated due to the lack of specific skill sets among young people in the technology field, and it is emphasized that such a program is crucial for enhancing the employability of job-seeking youth.
