Cost and Curriculum Concerns Prompt Move to Restrict Small Schools in the Netherlands

Dutch MPs are considering tighter legislation to limit the opening of new schools with low pupil numbers. The debate has intensified after the Renaissance School, which is linked to the Forum for Democracy (FVD) party, opened in Almere with just four pupils.

A law introduced in 2021 made it easier to establish schools based on new educational approaches or religious and philosophical beliefs. However, MPs have raised concerns about the cost of funding small schools and the inclusion of views in their curricula that could conflict with democratic values.

Judith Tielen, the junior education minister, said she would consider tightening or scrapping the rules that make it easier to open new schools. She noted that continuing to fund a growing number of small schools was becoming financially difficult.

All schools in the Netherlands are required to uphold democratic values, including equality and non-discrimination. The Dutch Inspectorate of Education has also said it will launch investigations into schools where necessary.
