South Korea Tightens Smart Glasses Checks in Exams

The South Korean Ministry of Education is planning to take new security measures to prevent cheating through AI-supported smart glasses in university entrance exams. The glasses of all candidates wearing them to the College Scholastic Ability Test (Suneung), which will be held on November 19, will be visually inspected by proctors before each exam session.

The new practice came to the agenda after attempts to cheat with smart glasses were detected in two separate university entrance exams held at Seoul University and Yonsei University in early October. The fact that these devices, which feature artificial intelligence functions, cannot be easily distinguished from ordinary glasses has increased the need for new measures regarding exam security.

The Ministry of Education also evaluated the option of detecting electronic devices using radio frequency detectors. However, it was stated that differences in the physical conditions of the exam centers could prevent the devices from working properly and lead to inaccurate results. Therefore, the ministry is prioritizing the direct visual inspection method for this year.
