Accent Discrimination in the UK Undermines Student Success

Despite growing linguistic diversity in UK higher education institutions, many students continue to face discrimination based on their accents. A study conducted by Dr. Gisela Tomé Lourido and Prof. Julia Snell at the University of Leeds found that 30% of university students reported being mocked for their accents, while 33% were concerned that their accents could negatively affect their future careers.

More than 600 students participated in the study, which showed that students from Northern England, those from working-class backgrounds, and non-native English speakers experienced the highest levels of discrimination. Students reported being perceived as “different” or “inferior,” not being taken seriously in academic discussions, and feeling pressured when expressing their ideas. This leads to reduced classroom participation and hinders the learning process.

Furthermore, some students reported losing self-confidence due to their accents and changed their career plans as a result, impacting their mental wellbeing. The study also revealed that accent discrimination intersects with other forms of bias such as class, race, gender, and disability.

Educators argue that universities must develop policies to prevent accent bias, offer awareness training for staff and students, publish statements promoting linguistic diversity, and establish safe reporting systems for students experiencing discrimination.
