American parents are concerned about math education

A survey in Massachusetts found that one-third of parents are worried about their children's math skills. Conducted by EdTrust and MassINC, the survey revealed that only 50% of parents believe their children are performing well in math, with the concern being more pronounced among low-income families.

Experts cited pandemic-related learning gaps and teacher shortages as major challenges. Salem Public Schools Superintendent Stephen Zrike noted that frequent turnover among math teachers and the lack of qualified educators have negatively impacted students' progress. The survey also highlighted that many eighth graders miss out on taking Algebra 1, a critical milestone for academic and college success.

Parents are increasingly turning to additional resources like tutoring, but financial constraints limit access for many families. Meanwhile, state officials noted that 20% of Massachusetts students are chronically absent, further hindering academic performance. To improve math education, experts recommend investing in teacher training, implementing better curricula, and addressing systemic inequalities.
