ChatGPT Usage Among U.S. Teens Doubles
The use of ChatGPT for schoolwork among U.S. teens has doubled since 2023, with 26% of students aged 13 to 17 reporting they have used the chatbot for academic purposes. Despite this increase, the majority of teens (73%) have not utilized the tool in their studies. The rise in usage is consistent across all demographic groups, but Black and Hispanic teens are more likely to use ChatGPT than their White peers. Similarly, older students, such as those in 11th and 12th grades, are the most frequent users.
Teens who are more familiar with ChatGPT are significantly more likely to use it for schoolwork, highlighting the impact of awareness on adoption. Those who have heard extensively about the tool are more supportive of its use for academic tasks, particularly for research. While 54% of teens approve of using ChatGPT for exploring new topics, fewer support its use for solving math problems or writing essays.
Awareness of ChatGPT has also grown significantly, with 79% of teens now aware of the tool compared to 67% in 2023. This increase is particularly notable among teens from low-income households, who experienced the largest growth in awareness over the past year.
The increasing use of ChatGPT in education raises important questions about its role and ethical implications in academic settings. As the tool becomes more prevalent, discussions about its appropriate applications and impact on learning are expected to intensify.
