U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing to sign an executive order to implement his long-standing plan to shut down the Department of Education. According to a statement from the White House, Trump will instruct Education Secretary Linda McMahon to take the necessary steps to dismantle the department and transfer education authority to the states.
However, Congressional approval is required for the department to be officially closed. Still, the Trump administration could effectively shut down its operations by cutting staff and restricting the budget. Secretary McMahon has already announced that half of the department’s staff has been laid off as the first step in this process.
Trump’s executive order will also prohibit the department’s funds from being allocated to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies or gender ideology programs.
Education experts and teachers' unions argue that this move will weaken public education and disproportionately harm disadvantaged groups. Becky Pringle, president of the National Education Association, warned that shutting down the department would increase class sizes, reduce vocational training programs, and make higher education more expensive.
