New Permission Rules for Home Education in the United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, parents of students subject to child protection inquiries or plans will now be required to obtain permission from their local authority if they wish to educate their children at home. Under new regulations set to be announced by the government this week, additional protection measures for children in the social care system will be introduced. These laws, announced by Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, also include significant changes relevant to schools.
This regulation comes in response to the rising popularity of home education, which has doubled over the past year, with a notable increase in poorer regions. A report published in May by the Child Protection Practice Review Panel highlighted that some children being educated at home had died or suffered abuse due to the lack of the protective factors that schools can provide. On the other hand, families who choose home education argue that they are left with no option, as schools are unable to meet their children’s specific needs.
