More Young People in the US Choosing Vocational Training over University
In the United States, an increasing number of high school graduates are opting for technical and vocational programmes instead of traditional university education. According to USA Today, rising student debt and the desire to enter the workforce more quickly are leading many young people to consider alternative pathways.
A concrete example of this shift is Nush Ahmed, the daughter of a Bangladeshi family living in New York. Defying her family’s expectations, she chose a technical training programme 800 miles away instead of enrolling in a four-year university. Today, she works in the 3D printing industry, earns $60,000 a year, and says she is satisfied with her decision.
Recent studies show that 45% of students are not interested in going to university, while 14% actively prefer technical colleges. Federal incentives have also contributed to the growing interest in vocational education.
While the annual cost of university ranges between $10,000 and $40,000, technical training programmes average around $15,000, making them a more accessible option for many. Experts emphasise the importance of guiding young people based on their interests and the needs of the labour market.
