China Invests in the Future with New Technology-Focused Degree Programmes
China’s Ministry of Education has approved 29 new undergraduate programmes aimed at supporting technology-driven growth in higher education. The newly introduced courses focus on strategic priority areas such as artificial intelligence, carbon neutrality engineering, low-altitude economy, and smart cities.
Programmes like carbon neutrality engineering are expected to contribute to the country’s climate goals and support the transformation of traditional industries. Leading institutions such as Beihang University are launching courses in emerging sectors including drone technologies and urban air mobility.
However, a shortage of qualified academic staff in the field of artificial intelligence remains a challenge. To address this gap, Beijing Normal University will launch a dedicated teacher training programme in AI starting in 2025.
In addition, 23 institutions have been granted vocational university status and will offer practice-oriented education aligned directly with technical and industrial needs. Education experts note that these developments reflect China’s efforts to reshape its human capital in line with the demands of future technologies.
