‘‘Artificial Intelligence Lawyer’’ Wins Its First Court Case

A law court in England has witnessed the successful conclusion of a legal process prepared by an AI-based law firm for the first time. Freelance human resources consultant Tamires Camal Taquidir initiated the legal proceedings by paying approximately £400 to the artificial intelligence firm ‘‘Garfield AI’’ in order to collect an unpaid debt. Following a three-hour hearing, Wandsworth County Court ruled in favor of the claim prepared by the AI, ordering the payment of Taquidir’s receivables, and this development went down in legal history as a first.

Garfield AI, which managed legal preparations behind the lawsuit, had been officially authorized by the UK Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) in April 2025. Throughout the case, the AI independently undertook all complex stages, such as responding to the opposing party's objections, organizing witness statements, and preparing the trial bundle. However, the oral advocacy and representation in the courtroom were carried out by a human barrister, as required by current legal regulations. Barrister Dominic Li, who represented the client at the hearing, noted that Garfield AI organized the case in a highly systematic and effective manner, while emphasizing that courtroom rhetoric and advocacy skills still rely on human expertise.

Marking a major milestone for the British legal sector, this decision demonstrates that artificial intelligence can facilitate access to justice by lowering high litigation costs and make the process much more accessible for small businesses. However, although viewed as a successful example, the reliability of the technology in more complex, multi-layered lawsuits and the question of who would bear legal liability in the event of an error raise serious questions.
