LSE Partners with Anthropic to Shape the Future of AI in Education
The London School of Economics (LSE) has announced a partnership with AI safety and research company Anthropic to provide all its students with access to 'Claude', Anthropic's AI technology. Through this collaboration, students will have free access to 'Claude for Education', an AI assistant specifically designed for higher education. Unlike traditional AI tools that provide direct answers, Claude guides students through their reasoning processes, aiming to enhance critical thinking skills. Additionally, 250 licenses will be made available for academic staff to support research into the responsible use of AI in education. This 12-month pilot initiative reinforces LSE's leadership in examining the implications of AI in higher education and society. LSE is among a select group of universities collaborating with Anthropic to develop frameworks for AI in education and to understand its broader societal impacts. Furthermore, LSE recently announced a new AI and Education Fellowship, funded by Visiting Senior Fellow Reid Hoffman, to support innovative approaches to integrating AI into teaching. LSE President and Vice Chancellor Professor Larry Kramer highlighted that this partnership underscores the unique position of social scientists in understanding and shaping how AI can positively transform education and society.
