New AI Tool from University of Bath Analyzes Public Opinion Data in Minutes
Researchers at the University of Bath have developed DECOTA (Deep Computational Text Analyzer), a new AI tool capable of rapidly and cost-effectively analyzing open-ended survey and policy consultation responses. Utilizing fine-tuned large language models, DECOTA identifies key themes and sub-themes within text data. Tests have shown that DECOTA achieves 92% agreement with human analysts but performs the analysis 380 times faster and at 1,900 times lower cost. The tool can assist governments and organizations in better understanding public opinion. Additionally, DECOTA can analyze whether specific demographic groups are more likely to mention certain themes. In line with transparency principles, the tool provides detailed explanations of the training data and processes used for its language models. Researchers emphasize that DECOTA aims to complement human analysts by reducing their workload and allowing them to focus on more in-depth analyses.
