Alabama paid a law firm millions to defend its prisons. It used AI and turned in fake citations

A law firm hired by the Alabama state government, Butler Snow, is facing possible sanctions after it was revealed that one of its attorneys submitted fabricated legal citations created using ChatGPT. The false cases were used in defense against a lawsuit filed by inmate Frankie Johnson, who alleges he was stabbed multiple times in prison due to staff negligence and systemic violence.

Federal Judge Anna Manasco expressed concern over the increasing use of AI-generated “hallucinations” in legal documents, warning that existing penalties have failed to deter misconduct. The attorney involved, Matthew Reeves, admitted to incorporating the citations without verification and accepted full responsibility, prompting the firm to begin reviewing past filings for similar issues.
