Microsoft Confirms AI and Cloud Services to Israeli Defense Ministry Amid Gaza War Scrutiny
Microsoft has confirmed its commercial relationship with Israel’s Defense Ministry (IMOD), providing cloud computing and AI services such as Azure and language translation tools. This confirmation comes amid increasing scrutiny over the role of U.S. tech companies in the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, with concerns from both employees and human rights organizations.
In a statement released Thursday, Microsoft denied that its technologies have been used to harm civilians in Gaza. The company stated it had launched an internal review and hired an external firm to investigate. Based on interviews and document reviews, it claimed no evidence had been found that its services were used in targeting or harming civilians.
The company emphasized that it does not develop or supply military-specific software, such as surveillance or combat applications. It also stated that many cloud operations for IMOD are handled by other providers, and that Microsoft does not monitor how its tools are used on private servers. A limited emergency support was provided following the October 7 attacks, aimed at hostage rescue.
