Ohio State Announces Decision on Students Using Artificial Intelligence

The conversation around artificial intelligence in education remains divided: while some see it as a valuable tool to support students who struggle with traditional learning methods, others caution that overreliance on tools like ChatGPT may hinder students’ ability to retain and comprehend information.

Ohio State University — one of the most prominent public universities in the United States — has made its stance on AI in academics clear. The administration will not only support students using AI tools individually but will also require every student to take a mandatory course on AI literacy.

“With AI fluency, Ohio State students will be ‘bilingual’ — fluent in both their major field of study and the application of AI in that area,” said Provost Ravi V. Bellamkonda. The university plans to embed AI education across the undergraduate curriculum, prioritizing the incoming class. By 2029, the goal is for every student to be fluent in how AI applies to their chosen discipline.
