Artificial Intelligence is now an A+ law student

According to a new study by the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, OpenAI’s latest model, o3, earned grades ranging from A+ to B on law school final exams. Compared to the mediocre results from earlier versions of ChatGPT in similar evaluations, these findings reflect a significant academic leap in the performance of generative AI.

The study’s authors — seven law professors from the University of Maryland — graded o3’s exam responses using the same curve applied to their students. The model performed strongly in several subjects, but showed weaker results in areas where it lacked access to recent legal developments.

Unlike ChatGPT, which instantly responds to prompts, o3 functions as a reasoning model — it explores multiple answer paths, evaluates and refines them internally, and only then generates a final response. The researchers wrote that they are already contemplating a follow-up experiment to determine how much of a cheating threat AI poses by instructing the program to make occasional spelling and grammar mistakes.
