US to Restrict the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Schools

In schools across the United States, students are increasingly using artificial intelligence to complete their assignments. With access to AI tools via mobile devices and platforms such as Google Chromebook, students can utilise this technology from virtually anywhere. In response, the Department of Education has launched a new initiative aimed at limiting the use of AI in schools.

The initiative seeks to prevent students from relying on AI to complete academic tasks, particularly written assignments and research projects. Teachers expect students to engage in writing essays, conducting research, and completing tasks based on personal experiences. However, many students now turn to AI tools to perform these tasks, which, according to educators, weakens their critical thinking and the ability to express personal insights through writing.

The use of AI-generated content is said to undermine students’ capacity to articulate their own thoughts and experiences. To address this issue, the Department of Education plans to introduce new policies and provide training to teachers on how to manage the use of AI in the classroom. The aim is to reduce the negative impact of AI on students' learning processes.

Teachers have expressed concerns that students’ creative thinking skills are diminishing due to their reliance on AI, and that academic integrity is increasingly under threat. Based on feedback from educators, the Department intends to implement necessary measures to safeguard students’ academic development and creative potential from the adverse effects of AI use.
