Bangladesh Temporarily Shuts Universities to Save Energy

The government of Bangladesh has decided to temporarily close universities nationwide to reduce electricity and fuel consumption. The decision was reportedly taken following a Cabinet directive.

In an official notice issued by the Ministry of Education, it was announced that universities would remain closed starting from March 9 until the dates specified in their academic calendars for the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays. The ministry also asked all university administrations to ensure that the decision is properly communicated and implemented.

As part of measures to reduce energy consumption, several guidelines were also introduced for administrative staff and employees at universities. According to the directive issued by the ministry, institutions were instructed to avoid using electric lighting during daytime hours when sufficient natural light is available. Universities were also encouraged to keep doors, windows, and blinds open to maximize natural light.

The ministry further called on universities to avoid decorative lighting, use energy-efficient equipment, limit vehicle use, and reduce fuel consumption. Officials stated that these measures are intended to promote more efficient energy use in public institutions and help control the country’s rising energy consumption.
