New Educational Strategies to Boost Math Performance in the U.S.
The new report from the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) offers six strategies for state education leaders to improve student math performance. CCSSO emphasizes the importance of a strong math foundation for students, as it is critical for developing problem-solving and critical thinking skills for their future.
This initiative comes in response to disappointing math performance nationwide. The 2022 National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) results showed a decline in average math scores for 4th and 8th graders compared to pre-pandemic levels. The CCSSO suggests these strategies should align with broader state education plans and be shaped by data and stakeholder input.
CCSSO encourages states to assist districts in selecting and adopting rigorous, equitable materials by creating approved lists, offering selection guidance, reducing procurement challenges, and providing grants for districts to obtain these resources. Beyond curriculum acquisition, teachers require “curriculum-embedded professional learning.”
CCSSO suggests state guidance to ensure all educators, including special education and support staff, are trained to effectively use the curriculum. CCSSO emphasizes that after-school and multi-tiered in-class supports should be aligned with core math lessons. States can support collaboration between tutors and teachers and guide districts in selecting appropriate supplemental materials.
These recommendations reflect recent successes in some states, like Rhode Island’s near double-digit math proficiency increase and higher advanced math enrollment in Washington.
