Online Education Becomes Key to Career Readiness

A recent survey conducted by the Penn Foster Group with over 300 high school teachers in the United States reveals a growing shift towards digital and skills-based education models. Over half of the respondents (54%) stated that they are now focusing their curricula more directly on real-world skills, driven by students’ increasing desire to see a clearer link between education and future careers.

The findings also suggest that today’s students are not just pursuing diplomas, but are actively seeking more flexible and alternative pathways that provide them with practical skills for the job market. Around 70% of teachers reported a noticeable rise in students aiming to enter the workforce immediately after graduation over the past five years.

Online education is emerging as a critical tool in meeting these evolving needs. According to the survey, 70% of teachers consider online programmes essential for workforce preparation, and three-quarters anticipate growing demand for such options. The flexibility of online learning allows students to better balance their studies with part-time work, internships, or family responsibilities.

Andy Shean, Chief Learning Officer at Penn Foster Group, noted that traditional education models are no longer sufficient to meet students’ diverse needs. He emphasised that flexible, skills-based and accessible approaches — including online learning, credit recovery, summer school and blended models — play a vital role not only in supporting graduation but also in equipping students to thrive in an ever-changing world.
