U.S. Schools Urged to Address Cellphone Use Policies
The U.S. Department of Education has called on states and schools to develop policies addressing cellphone use in classrooms. The department emphasized the importance of clear and consistent rules for regulating the use of personal devices.
Education Secretary Miguel Cardona stated that schools should adopt research-based policies tailored to their specific needs. “Each school’s requirements are different, so a one-size-fits-all solution does not work,” Cardona said, adding that parents, educators, and students should play an active role in shaping these policies.
In recent years, several states have introduced measures to limit cellphone use in classrooms. To support schools, the Department of Education has released a guide highlighting the risks social media poses to students’ mental health. Officials believe well-regulated policies on cellphone use could positively impact students’ academic performance and social development.
