TIMSS 2023 Results: Revealing the Impacts of Global Inequality
The TIMSS 2023 results have been published, providing insights into global student performance in mathematics and science. Over 650,000 students from 64 countries and 6 benchmarking systems participated in the study. The findings reveal that a significant majority of students demonstrate basic knowledge and skills, with 91% of fourth graders and 81% of eighth graders meeting the Low International Benchmark in mathematics.
However, compared to TIMSS 2019, a decline in eighth-grade performance was observed in more countries, while fourth-grade results showed a more balanced trend of increases and decreases.
The study highlights the significant impact of socioeconomic status on student success, with resource-rich students outperforming their less advantaged peers. Regular absenteeism also strongly correlates with lower achievement levels.
TIMSS 2023 underscores the need for countries to refine their educational policies and address issues such as socioeconomic disparities and student engagement to enhance academic outcomes globally.
