U.S. School Absences Reach Alarming Levels

In the U.S., chronic absenteeism, defined as missing over 10% of school days, continues to be a significant challenge in many school districts. Research conducted by Todd Rogers from Harvard University, alongside Emily Bailard and Mikia Manley from EveryDay Labs, highlights the detrimental impact of each missed school day on students' academic performance. This research emphasizes the importance of focusing not only on chronically absent students but also on those with moderate levels of absenteeism, who may often go unnoticed in intervention programs.

The study proposes strategies to enhance attendance, suggesting that direct communication with parents through printed mail proves more effective than digital messaging alone. EveryDay Labs' findings indicate that printed communications with parents have a stronger impact in reducing student absenteeism.

EveryDay Labs also underscores the need for sustained support throughout the academic year, rather than limiting interventions to chronically absent students. Research shows that data-driven, personalized interventions for students with moderate absenteeism can significantly improve overall attendance rates. This approach not only promotes consistent school participation but also bolsters academic performance by ensuring that more students are regularly engaged in their education.
