Australia Launches Spirituality-Focused Education Framework
For the first time, Australia has released an educational framework aimed at supporting the spiritual development of children. Titled the Children’s Spiritual Capabilities Framework, the guide is designed for children aged 0 to 8 and was developed by academics from Edith Cowan, Deakin and Notre Dame universities.
The framework was officially launched on 28 May at an event in Perth, the capital of Western Australia, organised by MercyCare. Speaking at the launch, Associate Professor Christine Robinson highlighted the critical role of spiritual development in fostering self-esteem, resilience and mental wellbeing.
Robinson explained that the framework offers teachers practical strategies to nurture a sense of identity, belonging, connection and meaning in young learners. She also stressed that spirituality should not be confused with religion, noting that every child has an inherent spiritual dimension.
Vicky Gonzalez Burrows, Executive at MercyCare, announced that the framework would be implemented across the organisation’s 12 early childhood education centres. The initiative is expected to support educators in adopting a holistic approach that enhances children’s emotional and mental development.
