Swiss Education and Research Cuts Plan Sparks Backlash

Planned budget cuts to the education and research sector, included in a savings package submitted to parliament by the Federal Council, have sparked strong reactions from students and academic staff in Switzerland. University representatives stated that the proposed cuts would threaten working conditions, increase job insecurity, and undermine both the quality and independence of science.

A coalition consisting of the Swiss Student Union (UNES), the mid-level academic staff union Actionuni, the public services union SSP, and the university lecturers’ association SwissFaculty held a joint press conference ahead of this week’s parliamentary debate in the House of Representatives. The group unanimously rejected the cuts, describing them as “nonsensical and dangerous.”

The mid-level academic staff union ActionUni emphasized that the cuts would disproportionately affect doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, and research assistants. The Swiss Student Union warned that a potential increase in tuition fees could deepen social inequalities. According to the union, more than 70 percent of students work while studying, and additional financial burdens could lead to “social selection.”

The public services union SSP stressed that education is a fundamental responsibility of the state and should not be shaped by a logic of profitability. The union reiterated its call for tuition-free higher education and adequate public funding in the long term. Ahead of the parliamentary discussions, academic groups urged lawmakers to withdraw the proposed cuts to education and research from the savings package.
