Health and Support Centre Launched in Germany to Tackle Teacher Burnout
A new support centre has been established in the German state of Hesse to help teachers cope with growing workloads and rising levels of burnout. The “Hesse Competence Centre for Healthy Schools”, launched by the education ministry in Wiesbaden, brings together existing and new services aimed at supporting teachers’ psychological and physical wellbeing across the state.
Officials say teachers are experiencing increasing stress and fatigue due to classroom discipline challenges, staff shortages and growing administrative demands. The programme, developed in cooperation with the Institute of Occupational, Social and Environmental Medicine at Frankfurt University Hospital, will offer teachers access to psychological counselling by phone, video call or in person. Training sessions and workshops on stress management, resilience, nutrition and physical activity will also be available.
In the coming months, a mobile “health bus” is also planned to visit schools and provide on-site support. Hesse’s education minister, Armin Schwarz, said teachers play a vital role in society and that the new centre aims to strengthen their mental and physical health. Officials hope the initiative will help reduce work-related pressure and prevent professional burnout among educators.
